Hello Shooting Stars Parents,
Welcome. I hope everyone has been having a great summer so far and will be enjoying the remaining days before school starts. Hockey season is approaching fast and this communication is a general overview of where we're at so far and to get you some of the important dates for the upcoming season. Further updates will be coming over the next few weeks as information becomes available.
1) Our Executive Committee 2) Pre-Season Power Skating/Hockey Camp
3) Practice and Regular Season Times
4) Bantam and Midget Tryouts 5) New 'B' Categorization for our Teams
6) Request for Volunteers
1) Our Executive Committee
--------------------------------------------------------------------- First, some introductions, especially for the families that are new to our organization this year. Thanks to the generous volunteer efforts of our parents, our executive committee has grown significantly this season and this will certainly help lighten the load for all involved. We exist to provide the best possible experience for our players and, as such we are always open to your ideas, comments and suggestions. Our executive committee is as follows:
Registrar - Janet Stewart Team Convenor - Jim Mullin Fundraising/Sponsorship - Nancy Sharma Treasurer - Andy Holliday Ice/Ref Convenor - Faith Bradley Equipment Manager - Jason Barlow
2) Pre-Season Power Skating/Hockey Camp --------------------------------------------------------------------- As in past years, we are offering a pre-season Power Skating/Hockey Skills Camp to kick off the season. This is a great opportunity to get your daughters on the ice early, ensuring they are in-shape and ready for both tryouts and the upcoming season (participation is optional). These will be held at the Flesherton & District Arena with dates and times for these sessions tentatively scheduled as follows:
Wednesday, September 14th 5:30-7:30pm
Sunday, September 18th 4-6pmSunday, September 25th 2-4pm Tuesday, September 27th 5:30-7:30pm
Each date will be broken up into 2 x 1-hour sessions with the Atom/Peewee players in the first session and Bantam/Midget players in the second session. Please mark these dates in your calendar. More details will be coming in the next week or two once dates, time and pricing is confirmed.
3) Practice and Regular Season Times
---------------------------------------------------------------------
The ice at the Markdale arena is currently scheduled to be ready on Monday, October 3rd and full team practices are expected to start that same week. Regular practices throughout the season will be held according to the following schedule:
AtomB: Tuesdays 5:30-6:30pm PeeWeeB: Wednesdays 6-7pm BantamHL: Tuesdays 6:30-7:30pm BantamB: Wednesdays 7-8pm MidgetHL: Tuesdays 7:30-8:30pm MidgetB: Wednesdays 8-9pm
We are still on track to have 7 teams this season and our home games will generally be every other Saturday with the following times:
BantamHL Saturdays at 9:45 am PeeWeeB Saturdays at 11:00 am MidgetHL Saturdays at 12:00 pm
AtomB Saturdays at 1:30 pm
BantamB Saturdays at 2:30 pm MidgetB Saturdays at 3:45 pm IntermediateB Saturdays at 5:15 pm
The league scheduling meetings will be completed by the weekend after Thanksgiving so your team's Manager will be in contact with you after that time to give you the complete schedule. Regular league games can start the weekend after Thanksgiving but usually don't get going until the following weekend.
4) Bantam and Midget Tryouts ---------------------------------------------------------------------
Tryouts for our BantamB and MidgetB teams are currently scheduled to take place after we've had 2 Power Skating sessions according to the following schedule:
Friday, September 23rd Bantam 6:00-7:30pm Midget 7:30-9:00pm
Saturday, October 1st
Bantam 9:00-10:30pm Midget 10:30-12:00pm
Note, these tryouts are intended only for those players that are interested in playing for the competitive B team. Trying out for the B team is optional so if you daughter does not want to play on a competitive team, you should not be attending these sessions and can safely ignore these dates.
5) New 'B' Categorization for our Teams
---------------------------------------------------------------------
You may notice we no longer have any 'C' teams in the schedules above. The OWHA has introduced a new rule this year that states that the first competitive team entered must be registered at a minimum of 'B'. All small centres throughout Ontario are going through the same change so it will be interesting to see and learn how this all turns out as the season is progresses.
6) Request for Volunteers
---------------------------------------------------------------------
As everyone is aware, the Shooting Stars is operated by the volunteer efforts of all of us parents. In addition to the basic efforts of running the clock or helping with door admission fees, we always need your help for coaching staff as well as other tasks that help the organization as a whole. Please take a moment to look inwards at yourself to see what you can do to help and be ready to say 'yes I can' when approached to help with various tasks throughout the season. Many people help ease the burden for all involved. You all have something to contribute and we'd appreciate your support in any way possible. Please contact Chris Brown < ghss@shootingstarshockey.ca> to express your interest and learn more about the opportunities available.
